I have lost my only car key – what should I do?

What do you need in order to make a key?

The car documents or your ID – we have to make sure the car is yours. An existing key (even a broken one) or the key code card, if you kept it, speeds things up. If you have nothing, we make the key from the car lock.

Will the new key work with the immobiliser and start the car?

Yes. We program the transponder (chip) key and pair it with the immobiliser of your car, and the remote with the central locking. Without programming the key would only open the doors, but the engine would not start.

How long does it take to make a key?

It depends on the make, model and type of key: a copy from an existing key is quicker, while a transponder key when no key is left takes more work. We will give you an estimate on the phone once we know the details of the car.

How a car key is made

A key can be made in three ways – we choose depending on what you have:

from an existing key – the fastest way, ideal for a spare copy;
from the key code – if you kept the code card or tag you received when buying the car;
from the car lock – when there is no key and no code left.

Why a key has to be programmed

Most cars built since around 1995 have an immobiliser: a chip (transponder) inside the key that the car must recognise before it lets the engine start. That is why cutting the blade alone is not enough – such a key will open the doors, but the engine will not start. A new key has to be programmed and paired with the immobiliser of that particular car, and the remote with its central locking.
